காட்டுக்குள் பூதம் ஒன்று இருந்தது. அது அங்கு இரவு நேரங்களில் வரும் மக்களுடன் சண்டையிட்டு அவர்களை அடித்து சாப்பிட்டுவிடும். சண்டையிடும் போது எதிராளியின் வலிமையும் பூதத்திற்குச் சேர்ந்து விடும். இந்த மூவரும் திடகாரமானவர்கள். பார்த்ததும் பூதத்திற்கு ‘இன்று நல்ல வேட்டை தான்’ என்று தோன்றியது.
மூவர் முன்பும் வந்து நின்றது. நான்கு பேரும் ஒப்பந்தம் செய்து கொண்டார்கள். மூன்று ‘ஷிப்ட்’ போட்டு பூதத்துடன் சிறுவர்கள் சண்டையிட வேண்டும். யாரையாவது ஒருவரை பூதம் அடித்து வீழ்த்திவிட்டால், மூவரையும் சாப்பிட்டு விடும். ஒப்பந்தத்திற்கு மூவரும் ஒப்புக்கொண்டதும் முதலில் பலராமர் சண்டையிட்டார்.
பால கிருஷ்ணரும், அவரது அண்ணன் பலராமரும், நண்பர் சுதாமரும் காட்டு வழியில் நடந்து வந்தார்கள். இருட்டுவதற்குள் ஊர் திரும்பி விடலாம் என்று அவர்கள் வேகமாக நடந்தாலும் இரவைத் தடுக்க முடியவில்லை. இரவு நேரத்தில் காட்டுக்குள் தங்கியாக வேண்டிய நிலைமை. பலராமர் வீரர் தான். ஆனால் பெரிதாக பூதம் வளரத் தொடங்கியதால், பலந்த காயத்தோடு சுதாமரை எழுப்பினார். அடுத்து சுதாமரும் ஆக்ரோஷத்துடன் போரிட்டார். இன்னும் நான்கு மணி நேரம் கழிந்தது. அவராலும் பூதத்தை வீழ்த்த முடியவில்லை. கடைசியாக கிருஷ்ணரை எழுப்பிவிட்டு சுதாமர் தூங்கிவிட்டார்.
“பூதம் எங்கே?” என்று இருவரும் கேட்டார்கள். “பூதமா... அப்படின்னா” என்று பதில் கேள்வி வந்தது. இருவரும் வற்புறுத்தவே, கிருஷ்ணர் தனது அங்கியில் இருந்த முடிச்சை அவிழ்த்து, “இதுவா...” என்று கேட்டார். ஆம், அது பூதம் தான். கட்டை விரல் வடிவத்தில் இருந்த அந்த பூதம், விட்டால் போதும் என்று தலை தெறிக்க ஓடிவிட்டது.

உண்மையில் நடந்தது இதுதான். சண்டையிடும் போது பெரியதாகும் பூதம், எப்போது சிறியதாகும் என்று யாரும் யோசிக்கவே இல்லை. பூதம் சண்டையிட கிருஷ்ணரைப் பார்த்தப் போது அவர் அமைதியாக உறங்கிக்கொண்டிருந்தது போல இருந்தார். பூதம் உற்சாகம் குறையத் தொடங்கியதும் வடிவமும் சிறியதாகத் தொடங்கியது. கிருஷ்ணர் அப்போதும் அதைக் கண்டுகொள்ளாமல் போகவே கட்டை விரல் வடிவத்தில் சுருங்கிவிட்டது.
சண்டையிட்டதால் பலராமர், சுதாமர் இருவருக்கும் நல்ல தூக்கம். மறுநாள், சூரிய ஒளி நன்றாகத் தெரிந்த பிறகு தான், இருவரும் எழுந்தனர். கிருஷ்ணர் உடலில் சிறு காயம் கூட இல்லாமல் தூங்கி கொண்டிருந்தார். இருவருக்கும் ஆச்சரியம். பூதம் என்னவானது என்று தெரிந்து கொள்ளும் ஆர்வத்துடன் இருவரும் கிருஷ்ணரை எழுப்பினார்கள். கிருஷ்ணர் உற்சாகமாக எழுந்து உட்கார்ந்தார். பெரிய தத்துவத்தை உணர்ந்து கொண்டது போல பலராமரும், சுதாமரும் கிருஷ்ணரைப் பார்த்தார்கள். எதுவும் நடக்காதது போல, புன்னகைத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார் ஸ்ரீ கிருஷ்ணர்.
