என் தாத்தா வீட்டில் ஒரு மாட்டுக் கொட்டகை இருந்தது. அங்கே இரண்டு மாடுகள் கட்டப்பட்டு இருக்கும். இருட்டில் பார்த்தால், மாடுகளின் கண்கள் மட்டும் பெரிய கோலிக் குண்டுகளாகத் தெரியும். இரவுகளில் அதைக் காட்டி, ‘கும்மா வந்திரும்’ என்று சொல்லி, என் அத்தைகள், மாமிகள் எல்லோரும் குழந்தைகளைப் பயமுறுத்திச் சாதம் ஊட்டுவார்கள்.
அதே மாட்டுக் கொட்டகையைக் காட்டி, சாதம் ஊட்டுவதற்காக என்னையும் பயமுறுத்த முனைந்தார்கள். ‘அது கும்மா இல்லை, பசுமாடு’ என்று சொல்லிச் சிரித்தேன். அவர்கள் வாயடைத்துப் போனார்கள். அதுபற்றிப் பல நாட்கள் ஆச்சர்யப்பட்டுப் பேசிக் கொண்டு இருந்தார்கள்.
எனக்கு ஏன் இருளைப் பார்த்து பயம் வரவில்லை? எளிமையான காரணம்தான். மற்றவர்களுக்கு இருட்டில் மாட்டின் கண்கள் மட்டும் புலப்பட, எனக்கோ மொத்த மாடும் தெரிந்தது. அன்றைக்கே, இருளில் மற்றவர்களைவிடத் தெளிவாக என்னால் பார்க்க முடிந்தது. இருள் எனக்கு ஒருபோதும் பிரச்சனையாக இருந்ததில்லை.
எத்தனையோ முறை வனங்களில் சுற்றித் திரிந்திருக்கிறேன். 11 வயதில் ஒருமுறை மூன்று நாட்கள் காட்டில் தனியாக அலைந்திருக்கிறேன். இரவுகளில் பயன்படுத்த ஒரு தீப்பெட்டி கூட என்னிடம் கிடையாது. இருள் என்னிடம் நட்பாகவே இருந்திருக்கிறது.
மூன்று நாட்களுக்கு நான் வீடு திரும்பாததால், என்னைக் கண்டுபிடிக்க வீட்டில் பல முயற்சிகள் நடந்தன. ஒரு போலீஸ் இன்ஸ்பெக்டரும் என்னைத் தேடிக் கொண்டு இருந்ததாக அறிந்தேன். நான் வீடு திரும்பியபோது, எல்லோருக்கும் ஒரு கேள்விதான் பெரிதாக இருந்தது. ‘இரவுகளில் தூங்குவதற்கு என்ன செய்தாய்? ஏதாவது பாழடைந்த கோயில் இருந்ததா?’
“இல்லை. இருட்டிலும் காட்டில் நடந்து கொண்டுதான் இருந்தேன். ஓய்வெடுக்க நினைத்தபோதெல்லாம் ஏதாவது ஒரு மரக்கிளையில் போய்த் தங்கினேன்” என்றேன்.
“அடப்பாவி! இருட்டைக் கண்டால் உனக்கு பயமாக இல்லையா?” என்று கேட்டார்கள். “என்னால்தான் இருட்டில் வெகு தெளிவாகப் பார்க்க முடிந்ததே... நான் பார்த்த எதுவும் என்னைப் பயமுறுத்துவதாக இல்லை” என்றேன். என் அப்பா தலையில் அடித்துக் கொண்டார். ‘ஐயோ, இந்தப் பையனுக்கு பயமே இல்லையே! இவனுக்கு என்ன ஆகப்போகிறதோ?’
எனக்குப் புரியவே இல்லை. எதையாவது தெளிவாகப் பார்க்க முடியாமல் இருந்தால்தான், அதன்மீது பயம் வர வாய்ப்பு இருக்கிறது. பயப்படும் மகனாக இருந்தால், அவனுக்கு ஏதாவது ஆகிவிடுமோ என்று கவலைப்பட வேண்டும். எனக்கு பயம் இல்லை என்பதே அவருக்கு பயமாக இருந்தது. எனக்கு ஆச்சர்யமாக இருந்தது.
இருள் என்றால் ஒன்றுமில்லை என்றுதானே அர்த்தம்! ஏதோ இருந்தால்கூட அது உங்களை ஏதாவது செய்யலாம். எதுவுமே இல்லாத ஒன்று உங்களை என்ன செய்துவிட முடியும்? இருளைக் கண்டு எதற்குப் பயப்பட வேண்டும்?
எதையாவது கண்டு பயந்தால்தான் அது பூதாகரமாகத் தோன்றும். பயம் இல்லாதபோது ஒருவருக்கு என்ன இழப்பு நேர்ந்துவிட முடியும்?
நீங்கள் குழந்தையாக இருந்தபோது, உங்களை அன்பால், நம்பிக்கையால் கட்டுப்படுத்தத் திறனில்லாத பெரியவர்கள், இதையும் அதையும் சொல்லிப் பயமுறுத்தி வைத்திருப்பார்கள். இருளைக் கண்டு அச்சப்படுவதற்குக் கற்றுத் தந்தது அவர்கள்தான். பழைய பிம்பங்கள், கற்பனை உருவங்கள், ஏற்கனவே சேகரித்த அச்சங்கள் இவைதான் உங்களை இருளில் ஆட்டிப் படைக்கின்றன.

காரணம், இருளில் எல்லாம் ஒன்றுடன் ஒன்று பாகுபாடு இன்றி ஐக்கியமாகிவிடுகின்றன. வெளிச்சம் வந்ததும் ஒவ்வொன்றும் தன் அடையாளத்தோடு விறைத்து நிற்கிறது. இருள் என்பது உண்மைக்கு வெகு அருகில் இருக்கிறது. வெளிச்சம் என்பது பொய்க்கு அருகில் இருக்கிறது.
